This Automated Denitrifier was popular during the wet/dry trickle filter era from 1984 to 1994. But when the Berlin Method (Berlin System) became the norm in 1994 these denitrifiers went out of popularity because they were not needed to reduce nitrates. Excess nitrates were a byproduct of undersized and inefficient wet/dry filters and these helped reduce water changes and did reduce nitrates to zero. Also, there were many more efficient venturi protein skimmers on the market and an efficient protein skimmer will reduce nitrates.
If you are having nitrate problems you might take a look at your protein skimmer as the problem because an efficient protein skimmer will reduce your nitrates. Needle-wheel protein skimmers are very inefficient at complete protein removal and as such nitrates become high and why many in the hobby are having to use bio-pellets and having to use denitrifiers, vodka dosing, etc. Get a Lifereef Protein Skimmer and your proteins will be removed more efficiently and probably not need bio-pellets nor a denitrifier. Much less costly and you can avoid another potential danger area as denitrifiers, if not run correctly, can destroy an aquarium.

If you are doing weekly or monthly water changes to reduce
nitrates consider using the Lifereef Automated Denitrifier.
The Lifereef automated denitrifier operates by batch treating
aquarium water in the acrylic holding container. Bacteria in the container are
automatically fed an organic solution using a timed peristaltic pump. When
nitrates are reduced to zero the water in the container is automatically
returned to your filter sump. The container is then filled with aquarium (sump)
water and the automatic feed/dump cycle is repeated. All this is controlled
with the digital timer and can do this up to 3 times per day.
Out denitrifier excels over the competitions' units because
we eliminated a troublesome sliding solenoid valve or pinch valve that is prone
to salt creep jamming and requires cleaning to keep it functioning properly.
The only moving parts in our denitrifier are the power head pumps and the
peristaltic feeding pump. Our unit is already to hook up, no wires to fumble
around with and no wires hanging all over the place. What you see in the photo
is what it looks like in use, clean.
